HISTORY :
Gurpur locally known as Kowdoor. was originally a part of Pezar, passing on to the Ferar when it became a parish in 1912. The foundation for a chapel was laid in 1915 and Fr Joseph M. Menezes of Ferar, built a small chapel in 1918 which was inaugurated by Bishop Paul Perini on October 29, 1918. It was served from Ferar. Gurpur became an independent parish on May 8, 1921. Fr Anthony A. Colaco was the first resident parish priest. His successor Fr F.X. Nazareth (1922-1930) built a façade and secured a bell for the church. Fr Raphael Pinto built the presbytery in 1931. The main wooden carved Altar of Our Lady of Pompei, donated by the Hospet church was blessed in October, 1933 during the time of Fr Aveline Rebello. On April 2, 1934 he erected a huge cross on the hill in remembrance of the 150 years of Tipu’s captivity of the Christians. He added the portico to the church in 1937.
Fr A.G. Nazareth (1940-1948) constructed the road leading to the church. Fr John Castelino (1948-1955) re-roofed the church. Fr John S. Titus Rodrigues constructed the grotto, the belfry, and did the electrification of church and presbytery. Fr Gratian L. D’Souza (1972-1978) provided benches, a new altar and a lectern to the church. Fr Stanly Periera (1983-1991) sank a huge well. Fr Leo Veigas constructed the new presbytery and the present new church building in 1998. Fr Cyprian Pinto built the church hall in 2001 and arch at the road entrance.
Fr Anthony A. Colaco began a primary school here in 1922. Fr John S.T. Rodrigues constructed the new school building and Fr Gratian L. D’Souza added a portion of building building to the school Fr Leo Veigas renovated the school building.

This church is situated at a distance of 19 kms from Mangalore, and along the Mangalroe-Moodbidri highway is surrounded by Ferar, Bajpe, Vamanjoor and Omzoor parishes.
