HISTORY :
In 1960, the initiative to build the Bovikanam Chapel was undertaken under the leadership of Fr Vincent Menezes, then parish priest of Narampady Church. After years of dedication, the chapel was finally blessed on 14 April 1982 by Dr Basil S. D’Souza, the then Bishop of Mangalore. Its establishment was a great relief to the faithful, who previously had to travel 13 kilometres to attend prayers at Narampady Church.
Initially, Holy Mass was celebrated every Saturday. For a certain period, Mass was also offered every Sunday at 11:00 am, followed by Catechism classes for children. However, this arrangement became difficult for the parish priest of Narampady, given his multiple responsibilities. To resolve this, the chapel was entrusted to the Pallottine Congregation on 1 June 2016 by the Bishop of Mangalore.
In a significant development, effective from 1 May, the Bishop of Mangalore has elevated Bovikanam Chapel to the status of a quasi-parish. With this declaration, around 25 families from Narampady Parish have now been officially incorporated into the newly formed Bovikanam Quasi Parish.
Location:
The church is located in Kasaragod District, Kerala, about 50 km from Mangalore, and is surrounded by the Kasaragod, Bela and Kollangana parishes.
