HISTORY :

Once part of Vittal,In 1971, the late Fr Peter Nazareth, then Parish Priest of Vittal Church, wrote to the late Bishop Rt Rev Dr Basil S. D’Souza on 1 January 1971, seeking permission to celebrate Holy Mass in the homes of poor Catholic families living in remote villages. Many of the faithful in places such as Manela, Peruvai, and Delanthabettu were unable to attend Sunday Mass and other spiritual celebrations due to poverty, long distances, and the dangers of travel.

Over time, churches and presbyteries were established in Peruvai and Manela, and both later became independent parishes with resident parish priests. However, the spiritual needs of the faithful in Delanthabettu remained unmet. To sustain their faith, the people of Delanthabettu constructed a temporary shed with a coconut-leaf roof supported by wooden poles. This makeshift structure was often damaged by strong winds, and the impoverished community struggled to repair it.

In the meantime, the local Catholics purchased land for a cemetery to serve their community. Later, with great sacrifice, they acquired additional land from two non-Christian families at nominal rates to build a church dedicated to St Paul the Apostle. The project was undertaken both to serve their spiritual needs and to commemorate the Jubilee Year 2000 of St Paul.

To mark this jubilee, the parish council of Vittal, under the leadership of parish priest Fr Peter Serrao and with the wholehearted support of the Delanthabettu faithful, decided to construct a new church dedicated to St Paul. The plan, strongly supported by the Bishop of Mangalore, Most Rev Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza, was set at an estimated cost of ₹80 lakhs.

The foundation stone of the new church was laid in September 2011 by Rev Fr Denis Moras Prabhu, then Vicar General of the Diocese of Mangalore. At that time, Delanthabettu had 110 Catholic families with a population of 625.

In 2018, Bishop Aloysius Paul D’Souza, through a decree, formally declared Delanthabettu as an independent parish.
