Mangalore, June 16, 2025 – The Diocese of Mangalore successfully conducted an intensive training program for its newly selected Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EMHCs) on June 15, 2025, at Mangala Jyothi. The half-day session, held from 08:30 AM to 01:30 PM, aimed to provide comprehensive formation to these ministers in preparation for their sacred service.
A total of 158 participants from various parishes across the Diocese attended the training, demonstrating their commitment to this vital ministry. Each participant who successfully completed the program was awarded a certificate, recognizing their dedication and readiness for service.
The training curriculum was thoughtfully designed to cover both theoretical and practical aspects of the EMHC ministry. The key topics dealt with during the session included:
History of Extraordinary Ministry: Providing a historical overview of the evolution and necessity of the EMHC role within the Church.
Liturgy and Theology of the Eucharist: Deepening the understanding of the central mystery of the Eucharist, its liturgical celebration, and its theological significance.
Spirituality of the Extraordinary Minister: Fostering a profound spiritual appreciation for their ministry, emphasizing personal reverence, humility, and faith.
Practical Training: Offering hands-on guidance on the proper handling of sacred vessels, distribution of Holy Communion, and maintaining appropriate decorum.
Diocesan Guidelines: Outlining specific guidelines and protocols for EMHCs within the Diocese of Mangalore, ensuring uniformity and adherence to liturgical norms.
The training was facilitated by distinguished resource persons:
Rev. Dr. Ronald Serao, a revered Professor of Liturgy and former Rector of St. Joseph Seminary, shared his profound theological insights and expertise on the Eucharist and liturgical practices.
Fr. Rohit Dcosta, Designate Director of Mangala Jyothi, contributed valuable perspectives and practical guidance, drawing from his pastoral experience.
This meticulously organized formation program underscores the Diocese of Mangalore’s dedication to ensuring that the Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are well-prepared, spiritually grounded, and fully equipped to assist the clergy in distributing the Body and Blood of Christ with the utmost reverence and care. The newly trained EMHCs will now play a crucial role in enriching the spiritual life of their respective parish communities.
