MANGALORE, AUG 23, 2024: A powerful protest against the rising atrocities toward women was held at the Clock Tower in the heart of Mangalore city. Organized by a coalition of prominent organizations such as Commissions for Women & Social Justice and the Commissions for Youth & Social Communication of the Mangalore Diocese, along with the All Karnataka United Christian Forum for Human Rights (AKUCFHR), Catholic Sabha Mangalore Pradesh (R), Mother Theresa Vichara Vedike, St Aloysius (Deemed to be University), and Conference of Religious India (CRI) Mangalore Unit., the event drew significant attention and participation from various sectors of society, all united under the banner “Demanding Safety.”
The protest was held to voice the anguish of Mangaloreans in Dakshina Kannada over the growing atrocities against women across the country. It aimed to bring attention to all such incidents, calling for stronger measures to protect women and ensure their safety in society.

ಮಂಗಳೂರು, ಆ.23, 2024: ಮಹಿಳೆಯರ ಮೇಲೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚುತ್ತಿರುವ ದೌರ್ಜನ್ಯಗಳ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ಪ್ರಬಲ ಪ್ರತಿಭಟನೆ ಮಂಗಳೂರು ನಗರದ ಹೃದಯಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಕ್ಲಾಕ್ ಟವರ್ ಹತ್ತಿರ ನಡೆಯಿತು. ಮಂಗಳೂರು ಧರ್ಮಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದ ಮಹಿಳಾ ಮತ್ತು ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ನ್ಯಾಯ ಆಯೋಗಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಯುವ ಮತ್ತು ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಸಂವಹನ ಆಯೋಗಗಳು, ಅಖಿಲ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಮಾನವ ಹಕ್ಕುಗಳ ಸಂಯುಕ್ತ ಕ್ರೈಸ್ತ ಐಕ್ಯತಾ ವೇದಿಕೆ (AKUCFHR), ಕಥೋಲಿಕ್ ಸಭಾ ಮಂಗಳೂರು ಪ್ರದೇಶ (ರಿ), ಮದರ್ ಥೆರೆಸಾ ವಿಚಾರ ವೇದಿಕೆ, ಸೇಂಟ್ ಅಲೋಶಿಯಸ್ (ಪರಿಗಣಿತ ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾನಿಲಯ) ಮಂಗಳೂರು ಮತ್ತು ಕಾನ್ಫರೆನ್ಸ್ ಆಫ್ ರಿಲಿಜಿಯಸ್ ಇಂಡಿಯಾ (CRI) ಮಂಗಳೂರು ಜಂಟಿಯಾಗಿ ಈ ಮಹತ್ವದ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮವನ್ನು ಆಯೋಜಿಸಿದವು.
ದೇಶಾದ್ಯಂತ ಹೆಚ್ಚುತ್ತಿರುವ ಮಹಿಳೆಯರ ಮೇಲೆ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿರುವ ದೌರ್ಜನ್ಯಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಧ್ವನಿಗೂಡಿಸಲು ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿನ ಮಂಗಳೂರಿಗರ ಪರ ಪ್ರತಿಭಟನೆ ನಡೆಸಲಾಯಿತು. ಮಹಿಳೆಯರನ್ನು ರಕ್ಷಿಸಲು ಮತ್ತು ಸಮಾಜದಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರ ಸುರಕ್ಷತೆಯನ್ನು ಖಚಿತಪಡಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಬಲವಾದ ಕ್ರಮಗಳಿಗೆ ಕರೆ ನೀಡುತ್ತಾ ಎಲ್ಲಾರ ಗಮನ ಸೆಳೆಯುವಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರತಿಭಟನೆ ಸಹಕಾರಿಯಾಯಿತು.
ಸಿಆರ್‌ಐ ಮಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾದ ಧರ್ಮಭಗಿನಿ ಡಾ. ಸೆವ್ರಿನ್ ಮಿನೇಜಸ್ ಎಸ್‌ಎಪಿ, ಅವರ ಆತ್ಮೀಯ ಸ್ವಾಗತದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮವು ಪ್ರಾರಂಭವಾಯಿತು. ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಕಾರ್ಯಕರ್ತ ಫಾದರ್ ವಿನೋದ್ ಮಸ್ಕರೇನ್ಹಸ್ OFM CAP ಅವರು ಮಹಿಳಾ ನಾಯಕರ ಗುಂಪು ಬೆಂಬಲದೊಂದಿಗೆ ದೃಢವಾದ ಘೋಷಣೆಗಳನ್ನು ಕೂಗಿದರು.
ಮಹಿಳಾ ಆಯೋಗದ ಕಾರ್ಯದರ್ಶಿ ಶ್ರೀಮತಿ ಅನಿತಾ ಫ್ರ್ಯಾಂಕ್ ಪ್ರಾಸ್ತಾವಿಕವಾಗಿ ಮಾತನಾಡಿ, ಇತ್ತೀಚೆಗೆ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರದಾದ್ಯಂತ ಮಹಿಳೆಯರ ಮೇಲೆ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿರುವ ಹಲವಾರು ದೌರ್ಜನ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ವಿವರಿಸಿದರು. ಸುದ್ದಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಆತಂಕಕಾರಿಯಾಗಿ ಪ್ರಚಲಿತದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಈ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಗಳನ್ನು ಪರಿಹರಿಸುವ ತುರ್ತು ಅಗತ್ಯವನ್ನು ಅವರು ಒತ್ತಿ ಹೇಳಿದರು.
ವಕೀಲರಾದ ವಿಜೇತಾ ಪಿಂಕಿ ಡೇಸಾ ಅವರು ಜೀವನದ ವಿವಿಧ ಹಂತಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮಹಿಳೆಯರು ಎದುರಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ಸವಾಲುಗಳನ್ನು ವಿವರಿಸುತ್ತಾ, “ಅಪರಾಧಿಗಳು ಸುಲಭವಾಗಿ ಶಿಕ್ಷೆಯಿಂದ ತಪ್ಪಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳತ್ತಾರೆ. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಮಹಿಳೆಯರ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ದೌರ್ಜನ್ಯಗಳು ಹೆಚ್ಚಗುತ್ತಿವೆ” ಎಂದು ಅವರು ತಮ್ಮ ಹತಾಶೆಯನ್ನು ವ್ಯಕ್ತಪಡಿಸಿದರು ಮತ್ತು ಈ ಕ್ರೌರ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ನಿಗ್ರಹಿಸಲು ಮರಣದಂಡನೆಯಂತಹ ಕಠಿಣ ಕಾನೂನುಗಳನ್ನು ಜಾರಿಗೆ ತರಲು ನ್ಯಾಯಾಂಗಕ್ಕೆ ಕರೆ ನೀಡಿದರು.
ಪ್ರತಿಭಟನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಸಂತ ಅಲೋಶಿಯಸ್ (ಪರಿಗಣಿತ ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾನಿಲಯ)ದ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿನಿ ಸೈನಾ ಕ್ರಿಸ್ಟಲ್ ಡಿಸೋಜಾ ಅವರು “ಈ ಪ್ರತಿಭಟನೆಯನ್ನು ಮಧ್ಯರಾತ್ರಿ ನಡೆಸಿದರೆ ಎಷ್ಟು ಮಂದಿ ಸೇರುತ್ತಾರೆ ಎಂದು ಸಭಿಕರಿಗೆ ಸವಾಲಿನ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಯನ್ನು ಹಾಕಿ” ಭಾಷಣ ಮಾಡಿದರು. ಆಕೆಯ ಮಾತುಗಳು ಮಹಿಳೆಯರು ಪ್ರತಿದಿನ ಎದುರಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ವ್ಯಾಪಕ ಭಯವನ್ನು ಎತ್ತಿ ತೋರಿಸಿದವು ಮತ್ತು ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಮನಸ್ಥಿತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬದಲಾವಣೆಯನ್ನು ಒತ್ತಾಯಿಸಿದವು. “ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಬ್ಬ ಮಹಿಳೆ ಮತ್ತು ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಮಾನವ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಗೌರವಿಸಲು ನಾವು ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಮ್ಮ ಪುರುಷರಿಗೆ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ ನೀಡಬೇಕು” ಎಂದು ಅವರು ಪ್ರತಿಪಾದಿಸಿದರು. ಮಹಿಳೆಯರಿಗೆ ಅರ್ಹವಾದ ಘನತೆ ಮತ್ತು ಹಕ್ಕುಗಳಿಗಾಗಿ ಹೋರಾಡಲು ಪ್ರತಿಜ್ಞೆ ಮಾಡಿದರು.
ವಕೀಲೆ ಮರಿಯಮ್ಮ ಕೆ ಥಾಮಸ್ ವಿವಿಧ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಯಶಸ್ವಿಯಾದ ಭಾರತೀಯ ಮಹಿಳೆಯರು ತಮ್ಮ ಹಕ್ಕುಗಳನ್ನು ರಕ್ಷಿಸುವಲ್ಲಿ ಶಕ್ತಿಶಾಲಿಯಾಗಬಹುದು ಎಂದು ಶಕ್ತಿಯ ಸಂದೇಶವನ್ನು ಬಲಪಡಿಸುವ ಮಾತುಗಳಾನ್ಡಿದರು. “ಇಂತಹ ದೌರ್ಜನ್ಯಗಳು ಮುಂದುವರಿದರೆ, ಈ ಪ್ರತಿಭಟನೆಯು ಮುಂಬರುವ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಕ್ರಾಂತಿಯ ಮುನ್ನೋಟವಾಗಿದೆ” ಎಂದು ಅವರು ಎಚ್ಚರಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
ಮಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಮದರ್ ಥೆರೆಸಾ ವೇದಿಕೆಯ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾದ ಶ್ರೀ ರಾಯ್ ಕ್ಯಾಸ್ಟೆಲಿನೊ ಅವರು, ಸಂತ ಮದರ್ ಥೆರೆಸಾ ಅವರ ಮಾದರಿಯಿಂದ ಸ್ಫೂರ್ತಿ ಪಡೆದು ನ್ಯಾಯಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಹೋರಾಟದಲ್ಲಿ “ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಪುರುಷರು” ಮಹಿಳೆಯರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಸದಾ ಶಕ್ತಿಯಾಗಿ ನಿಲ್ಲುತ್ತಾರೆ” ಎಂದು ಮಹಿಳೆಯರಿಗೆ ಭರವಸೆ ನೀಡಿದರು.
ಅಖಿಲ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಮಾನವ ಹಕ್ಕುಗಳ ಸಂಯುಕ್ತ ಕ್ರೈಸ್ತ ಐಕ್ಯತಾ ವೇದಿಕೆ (AKUCFHR)ನ ಕಾರ್ಯದರ್ಶಿ ವಂದನೀಯ ಫಾ| ರೂಪೇಶ್ ಮಾಡ್ತಾ, ಭಾರತದ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಪತಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಬೇಕಾದ ಜ್ಞಾಪಕ ಪತ್ರವನ್ನು ಓದಿ ಹೇಳಿ ನೆರೆದ ಎಲ್ಲರ ಪರವಾಗಿ ಜಿಲ್ಲಾಧಿಕಾರಿಗಳಿಗೆ ತಲುಪಿಸುವಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರತಿಭಟನೆಯು ಮುಕ್ತಾಯಗೊಂಡಿತು.
ಅಂತಿಮವಾಗಿ, ಮಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಕ್ಯಾಥೋಲಿಕ್ ಸಭಾ (ಆರ್) ಉಪಾಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾದ ಶ್ರೀ ಸ್ಟೀವನ್ ರೊಡ್ರಿಗಸ್ ಅವರು ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಸಂಘಟಕರುಗಳಿಗೆ, ಭಾಗವಹಿಸಿದ ಕಾರ್ಯಕರ್ತರಿಗೆ ಕೃತಜ್ಞತೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿದರು.
ಈ ಘಟನೆಯು ಮಹಿಳೆಯರಿಗೆ ನ್ಯಾಯ ಮತ್ತು ಸುರಕ್ಷತೆಗಾಗಿ ಪ್ರತಿಧ್ವನಿಸುವ ಕರೆಯಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿ ಲಿಂಗ ಸಮಾನತೆಗಾಗಿ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿರುವ ಹೋರಾಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಹತ್ವದ ಕ್ಷಣವನ್ನು ಗುರುತಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.
The event began with a warm welcome by Rev. Sr Dr Severine Menezes SAP, President of CRI Mangalore, who set the tone for the afternoon. Social activist Fr Vinod Mascarenhas OFM CAP led the crowd in fervent slogans, supported by a group of determined women leaders.
Mrs Anita Frank DSA, Secretary for the Commission for Women, delivered an introductory speech detailing the numerous atrocities against women that have recently occurred across the nation. She emphasized the urgency of addressing these issues, which have been alarmingly prevalent in the news.
Advocate Vijetha Pinky Dsa provided a poignant account of the challenges faced by women at various stages of life—whether as children, youth, or adults in the workplace. She voiced her frustration over the ease with which perpetrators often evade justice and called on the judiciary to implement stricter laws, such as death penalties, to curb these cruelties.
The event saw a stirring speech by Saina Christal D’Souza, a student from St. Aloysius (Deemed to be University), Mangalore. She posed a challenging question to the audience, “How many would join this protest if it were held at midnight?” Her words highlighted the pervasive fear women face daily and urged a change in societal mentality. “We must educate our men at home to respect every woman and all human persons,” she asserted, vowing to fight for the dignity and rights women deserve.
Advocate Mariamma K Thomas reinforced the message of strength, stating that Indian women, successful in various fields, can also be powerful in defending their rights. She warned that if such atrocities continue, this protest would only be a preview of a larger revolution to come.
Mr Roy Castelino, President of Mother Theresa Vedike, Mangalore, assured the women that “good men” stand with them in their fight for justice, drawing inspiration from the model of St. Mother Theresa.
