MANGALURU, DEC 4: St. Joseph’s Inter-Diocesan Seminary, Jeppu, celebrated its annual ‘Seminary Day’ on Thursday, December 4, 2025, with a grand event that saw a last-minute change of venue but no shortage of spirit. Originally scheduled to be held within the historic seminary premises in Jeppu, the event was moved to the Father Muller Convention Centre in Kankanady, where a large gathering of priests, religious nuns, parents, and well-wishers witnessed a celebration of faith, culture, and priestly formation.

The event was graced by the Chief Guest, Most Rev. Dr. Vincent Aind, Archbishop of Ranchi and an alumnus of the institution.

Be Pastors, Not Businessmen”

In his keynote address, Archbishop Aind delivered a stirring message to the seminarians, echoing the teachings of Pope Francis. He emphasized the core identity of the priesthood, urging the young men in formation to become “good pastors” rather than “businessmen” or “boring preachers.”

“The church needs shepherds who smell of the sheep,” the Archbishop remarked, stressing authenticity in ministry. He also took a moment to walk down memory lane, recalling his own formative years at St. Joseph’s Seminary. He expressed deep gratitude for the solid foundation the seminary provided, which he credited for preparing him for the challenges and joys of his priestly and episcopal ministry.

Annual Report and Dignitaries

The Rector of the Seminary, Very Rev. Dr Rajesh Melwyn Rosario, presented the annual report, offering a comprehensive picture of the institution’s journey over the past year. The report highlighted the seminary’s growth, current challenges, and significant updates in formation policies, ensuring the gathering was well-informed about the life and mission of the 146-year-old institution.

The programme was presided over by Most Rev. Dr Peter Paul Saldanha, Bishop of Mangalore. The event was graced by several distinguished dignitaries, including Most Rev. Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, Bishop of Udupi; Most Rev. Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza, Bishop Emeritus of Mangalore; and Very Rev. Dr Ronald Serrao, the former Rector of the seminary.

Cultural Extravaganza and “The Lore of the Robes”

A highlight of the evening was the cultural presentation by the various language academies of the seminary. Seminarians from the Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi, and Konkani academies showcased unique performances that blended cultural heritage with deep faith-based values.

The centerpiece of the cultural segment was the English drama titled “The Lore of the Robes: An Ancient Blindness, a Timeless Test.” The play, along with the other presentations, revolved around the theme of “Human Formation,” delivering a powerful message about the internal transformation required of future priests.

The event concluded with the Seminary Anthem, leaving the large audience of parents, benefactors, and well-wishers with a renewed sense of hope for the future of the church. Despite the sudden shift in venue, the 2025 Seminary Day was marked by seamless organization and a profound spirit of community.
