• Year of Children: Parishes Across Mangalore Diocese Wash Feet of Children on Maundy Thursdays
MANGALURU, APRIL 02: The Diocese of Mangalore entered the sacred Paschal Triduum with profound devotion as Most Rev. Dr Peter Paul Saldanha, Bishop of Mangalore, presided over the Maundy Thursday liturgy at the Holy Spirit Church, Mukka, today at 6:00 PM.
The solemn Mass of the Lord’s Supper, commemorating the institution of the Holy Eucharist and the Priesthood, was concelebrated by Rev. Fr Stany Pinto, Parish Priest of Mukka Church, and Rev. Fr Praveen D’Souza.
In his inspiring homily, Bishop Peter Paul Saldanha emphasized the essence of Christian leadership. “Jesus, though He is God, humbled Himself to become a servant and washed the feet of His disciples. This act highlights a servant leadership deeply rooted in love,” the Bishop stated. He further added that Jesus calls every believer to love one another just as He loved us—a commandment of love given to the world. He urged the faithful to practice this selfless service within their families and society, transforming the world into a place of love and peace.
During the ‘Mandatum’ (washing of the feet), Bishop Peter Paul Saldanha washed the feet of twelve parishioners, mirroring the humility of Jesus who washed the feet of His apostles during the Last Supper. This ritual serves as a reminder of the call to humility and mutual service within the Christian community.
Simultaneously, across the 125 parishes of the Diocese, parish priests performed the washing of the feet with a special emphasis. In a meaningful gesture marking the ‘Year of Children’ currently observed in the Diocese of Mangalore, many priests washed the feet of children, symbolizing the Church’s commitment to nurturing the younger generation in the spirit of Christ’s humility and care.
The day, also celebrated as ‘Priesthood Day,’ saw the laity offering prayers for their spiritual leaders. The liturgy concluded with a solemn procession of the Blessed Sacrament to the ‘Altar of Repose’ followed by hours of silent adoration as the faithful reflected on Christ’s agony in Gethsemane.

ಮಂಗಳೂರು: ಮಂಗಳೂರು ಧರ್ಮಪ್ರಾಂತ್ಯದ ಧರ್ಮಾಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾದ ಪರಮ ಪೂಜ್ಯ ಡಾ. ಪೀಟರ್ ಪಾಲ್ ಸಲ್ದಾನ್ಹಾ ಅವರು ಮುಕ್ಕದ ಪವಿತ್ರಾತ್ಮರ ಚರ್ಚ್ನಲ್ಲಿ ಇಂದು ಸಂಜೆ 6 ಗಂಟೆಗೆ ಜರುಗಿದ ಪವಿತ್ರ ಗುರುವಾರ (Maundy Thursday) ಬಲಿಪೂಜೆಯ ನೇತೃತ್ವ ವಹಿಸಿದರು. ಈ ಮೂಲಕ ಪವಿತ್ರ ಸಪ್ತಾಹದ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಮೂರು ದಿನಗಳ ಆಚರಣೆಗೆ ಚಾಲನೆ ನೀಡಲಾಯಿತು.
ಈ ಸಂಭ್ರಮದ ಬಲಿಪೂಜೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಕ್ಕ ಚರ್ಚ್ನ ಧರ್ಮಗುರುಗಳಾದ ವಂದನೀಯ ಸ್ಟ್ಯಾನಿ ಪಿಂಟೊ ಹಾಗೂ ವಂದನೀಯ ಪ್ರವೀಣ್ ಡಿಸೋಜ ಅವರು ಉಪಸ್ಥಿತರಿದ್ದು ಸಹ-ಬಲಿಪೂಜೆ ಅರ್ಪಿಸಿದರು.
ಬಿಷಪ್ ಪೀಟರ್ ಪಾಲ್ ಸಲ್ದಾನ್ಹಾ ಅವರು ತಮ್ಮ ಪ್ರವಚನದಲ್ಲಿ, “ಯೇಸು ದೇವರ ಪುತ್ರರಾಗಿದ್ದರೂ, ಆತನೇ ಸೇವಕನಾಗಿ ತನ್ನ ಶಿಷ್ಯರ ಕಾಲುಗಳನ್ನು ತೊಳೆದರು. ಈ ಘಟನೆಯು ಪ್ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲೆಯೂರಿದ ಸೇವಕ ನಾಯಕತ್ವವನ್ನು ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಯೇಸು ನಮಗೆ ‘ನಾನು ನಿಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಪ್ರೀತಿಸಿದಂತೆಯೇ ನೀವು ಎಲ್ಲರನ್ನೂ ಪ್ರೀತಿಸಬೇಕು’ ಎಂದು ಕರೆ ನೀಡುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಇದು ಆತನು ಈ ಲೋಕಕ್ಕೆ ನೀಡಿದ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯ ಆಜ್ಞೆಯಾಗಿದೆ,” ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿಸಿದರು. ನಾವು ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ನಮ್ಮ ಕುಟುಂಬಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತು ಸಮಾಜದಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ವಾರ್ಥರಹಿತ ಸೇವೆಯ ಮೂಲಕ ಈ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯ ಆಜ್ಞೆಯನ್ನು ಅನುಸರಿಸಲು ಕರೆಯಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇವೆ, ಇದರಿಂದ ಈ ಜಗತ್ತು ಪ್ರೀತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಶಾಂತಿಯ ಸ್ಥಳವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದು ಅವರು ಆಶಿಸಿದರು.
ಬಲಿಪೂಜೆಯ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಿಷಪ್ ಅವರು 12 ಮಂದಿ ಪ್ರತಿನಿಧಿಗಳ ಪಾದಗಳನ್ನು ತೊಳೆದು ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ಸೇವೆಯ ಮನೋಭಾವವನ್ನು ಸಾರಿದರು.
ಇದೇ ವೇಳೆ ಧರ್ಮಪ್ರಾಂತ್ಯದ 125 ಚರ್ಚ್ಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಆಯಾ ಚರ್ಚ್ ಧರ್ಮಗುರುಗಳು ಈ ವಿಧಿಯನ್ನು ನೆರವೇರಿಸಿದರು. ಈ ವರ್ಷವನ್ನು ಮಂಗಳೂರು ಧರ್ಮಪ್ರಾಂತ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ‘ಮಕ್ಕಳ ವರ್ಷ’ ಎಂದು ಆಚರಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದು, ಇದರ ನೆನಪಿಗಾಗಿ ಅನೇಕ ಚರ್ಚ್ಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಧರ್ಮಗುರುಗಳು ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಪಾದಗಳನ್ನು ತೊಳೆಯುವ ಮೂಲಕ ವಿಶೇಷ ಅರ್ಥವನ್ನು ನೀಡಿದರು. ಬಲಿಪೂಜೆಯ ನಂತರ ಪರಮ ಪ್ರಸಾದವನ್ನು ವಿಶೇಷವಾಗಿ ಅಲಂಕರಿಸಿದ ಆಲ್ತಾರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಇರಿಸಿ, ಭಕ್ತಿಯಿಂದ ಆರಾಧನೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಲಾಯಿತು.
