Mangaluru, Mar 19 : The Inauguration of the first Autonomous batches of St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), Mangaluru, was held at the Kalam Auditorium of the college on 17 March 2022. Mr Alwyn Noronha, Executive Vice President-Projects (Rtd) of ITC Ltd-Hotels Division was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Most Rev. Dr Peter Paul Saldanha, Bishop of Mangalore and President of SJEC, presided over the program.

St Joseph Engineering College underwent rigorous assessment during the visit of the UGC Peer Team in November 2020 and was conferred Fresh Autonomous Status with effect from the Academic Year 2021-22. The fact that only a handful of engineering colleges in the state have attained Autonomous Status, adds to the credibility of the college that has been on a constant upswing. The first batch of UG and PG students under the Autonomous structure was inaugurated on the occasion.

The Principal, Dr Rio D’Souza, in his welcome address, greeted the students heartily and expressed his joy on seeing the first batch of BE, MBA and MCA students on campus. He remarked that it is a sign of great hope and a new beginning. He spoke about the various milestones achieved by the college from the beginning and assured that there are many more milestones to be achieved.

His Lordship, Most Rev. Dr Peter Paul Saldanha released the newly designed Autonomy Curriculum along with the other dignitaries. Academic achievers were honored on this occasion for their excellent performances.

The chief guest, Mr Alwyn Noronha in his address congratulated the college on the journey of attaining autonomous status. He requested the students to be grateful to their alma mater when they excel in their careers. While saying that each and every individual must learn from their failures, he asked the students not to worry about failures and use those failures as stepping stones of success. He went on to say that success does not come easy and one needs to strive hard to reach the top position. He called upon the students to be honest in whatever they do and learn out of each experience.

The Bishop, in his Presidential address, mentioned the various stages in the growth of an infant and compared it to the evolution of college. He said that the new curriculum must tune the minds and hearts of the students so that they enjoy what they are learning. He further said that due to autonomy the institution will have the freedom to introduce an industry-oriented curriculum. He remarked that an institution made of stone and iron has no value without human beings and encouraged the students to expand their knowledge beyond the curriculum.

Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, Director of SJEC, Rev. Fr Alwyn Richard D’Souza, Assistant Director, Mr Rakesh Lobo, HR Manager, Dr Vincent Crasta, Dean of Academics, Dr Sudheer M, Dean of R&D, Dr Ramananda HS, Dean of Student Welfare were also present on the occasion.
