MANGALURU, OCT 17: In a significant academic development, Dr. Sunil George D’Souza, a distinguished priest of the Diocese of Mangalore, has been appointed as the new head of the Chair in Christianity at Mangalore University. He succeeds Dr. Ivan D’Souza in this prestigious role.
Dr. D’Souza brings a wealth of academic and administrative experience to the position. With an impressive array of qualifications including an MCom, MHRM, PGDJMC, MPhil, and PhD, he is a respected figure in both scholarly and pastoral circles. His academic career includes serving as a faculty member at St Philomena College, Puttur, and Pompei College, Kirem. He was also widely admired for his visionary leadership and commitment to quality education during his tenure as the principal of St Joseph College, Jeppu.
A prolific writer and researcher, Dr. D’Souza has co-authored books and published papers in reputed international journals like the FIIB Business Review and Personnel Review. His doctoral research at Bharathidasan University focused on emotional intelligence and leadership within colleges in the Mangalore diocese. Beyond his academic work, he is a regular contributor of articles in Konkani and Kannada, reflecting his deep cultural engagement.
In his current role as the Diocesan Director of Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs), Dr. D’Souza has been a dynamic force for promoting participatory Church life. He has successfully conducted 47 workshops and training programs, empowering local parish communities and strengthening faith formation at the grassroots level.
About the Chair in Christianity
Established in 1987 under the initiative of the late Bishop Basil D’Souza, the Chair in Christianity at Mangalore University has a rich 38-year history of promoting the study of religion and its relevance to society. It focuses on the scriptures, philosophy, and ethics of Christianity while fostering Christian thought in the Indian context. The Chair regularly organizes lectures, seminars, and conferences on vital themes such as interreligious harmony, social concerns, ethics, and culture.
The Chair functions under the guidance of the University’s Vice-Chancellor and Registrar, working alongside an advisory committee that includes the Bishop of Mangalore, Most Rev. Dr. Peter Paul Saldanha.
