MANGALURU, APRIL 03: Marking the most sombre day in the Christian calendar, thousands of faithful across the Diocese of Mangalore participate in the Way of the Cross this Good Friday. This year’s observances carry a special significance as the Diocese celebrates the “Year of Children,” placing the younger generation at the heart of the Lenten and Paschal ceremonies.
Maundy Thursday: A Symbolic Start for the Little Ones
The focus on children began during the Maundy Thursday liturgy, which commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus Christ. In a departure from the traditional selection of twelve elders, many parishes across the Diocese invited children to participate in the Mandatum (Washing of the Feet) ceremony.
In these parishes, priests washed the feet of children, symbolising Christ’s message of humble service and unconditional love. This poignant gesture served as a powerful initiation for the children into the mysteries of the Holy Week, emphasising their importance as the present and future of the Church. Following the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, children also joined their families in the all-night vigil and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament at the Altar of Repose.
Good Friday: Children’s Way of the Cross
Today, the theme of the “Year of Children” continues with a special “Children’s Way of the Cross.” In a heart-touching display of devotion, children in various parishes take turns carrying the heavy wooden cross during the fourteen stations.
These dedicated sessions are designed to help children contemplate the Passion of Christ through age-appropriate reflections, hymns, and prayers. By physically participating in the procession, the children are given a tangible connection to the sacrifice of Jesus. In many parishes, these devotions are held outdoors in the church vicinity, drawing large crowds of faithful who witness the youth leading the community in prayer.
Outdoor Devotions and Live Enactments
Beyond the children’s participation, several parishes organised elaborate outdoor Way of the Cross processions this morning. Some featured live enactments where youth and parishioners portrayed the final journey of Jesus to Calvary, bringing the Gospel narrative to life for the gathered community.
In various churches, the traditional procession is led by parish priests, religious sisters, ward members, and representatives of various parish associations. The symbolic carrying of the wooden cross through the streets and the church campus serves as a public witness to the message of sacrifice, redemption, and communal faith.
Afternoon Solemnity and Episcopal Service at Panja
The atmosphere in the parishes remains one of prayerful silence as the morning devotions concluded by 12:00 noon. The faithful are currently spending the midday hours in quiet meditation, fasting, and abstinence.
As the clock strikes 3:00 PM—traditionally observed as the hour of Christ’s death—the solemn afternoon liturgical services begin. These ceremonies include the Reading of the Passion, the Adoration of the Cross, and Solemn Intercessions. In accordance with liturgical tradition, no Mass is celebrated today; instead, the faithful receive Holy Communion consecrated during the Maundy Thursday liturgy.

The day concludes in sombre anticipation of the Easter Vigil, which celebrates the Resurrection of Christ.

ಮಂಗಳೂರು: ಕ್ರೈಸ್ತ ಧರ್ಮದ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಪವಿತ್ರ ಹಾಗೂ ಶೋಕದ ದಿನವಾದ ‘ಶುಭ ಶುಕ್ರವಾರ’ವನ್ನು (ಗುಡ್ ಫ್ರೈಡೇ) ಮಂಗಳೂರು ಧರ್ಮಪ್ರಾಂತ್ಯದಾದ್ಯಂತ ಇಂದು ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಭಕ್ತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಶ್ರದ್ಧೆಯಿಂದ ಆಚರಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಈ ವರ್ಷದ ಆಚರಣೆಯು ವಿಶೇಷವಾಗಿ “ಮಕ್ಕಳ ವರ್ಷ” ಎಂಬ ಘೋಷವಾಕ್ಯದೊಂದಿಗೆ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದು, ಚರ್ಚ್ಗಳ ವಿವಿಧ ವಿಧಿವಿಧಾನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಪ್ರಾಧಾನ್ಯತೆ ನೀಡಲಾಗಿದೆ.
ಯೇಸುವಿನ ಕೊನೆಯ ಭೋಜನದ ಗುರುವಾರ: ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಪಾದಕ್ಷಾಲನೆ ಸೇವೆಯ ವಿಶೇಷತೆ
ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಮೇಲಿನ ವಿಶೇಷ ಕಾಳಜಿಯ ಭಾಗವಾಗಿ, ಯೇಸುವಿನ ಕೊನೆಯ ಭೋಜನದ ಗುರುವಾರದಂದು ನಡೆದ ‘ಪ್ರಭುವಿನ ಭೋಜನ’ದ ಬಲಿಪೂಜೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅನೇಕ ಚರ್ಚ್ಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಪಾದಕ್ಷಾಲನೆ ಮಾಡಲಾಯಿತು. ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಹನ್ನೆರಡು ಮಂದಿ ಹಿರಿಯರಿಗೆ ನಡೆಯುವ ಈ ಪಾದಕ್ಷಾಲನಾ ವಿಧಿಯನ್ನು ಈ ಬಾರಿ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಮಾಡುವ ಮೂಲಕ, ಯೇಸು ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತರು ತೋರಿದ ನಮ್ರತೆ ಮತ್ತು ಸೇವೆಯ ಗುಣವನ್ನು ಮುಂದಿನ ಪೀಳಿಗೆಗೆ ದಾಟಿಸುವ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ ಮಾಡಲಾಯಿತು. ಬಲಿಪೂಜೆಯ ನಂತರ ನಡೆದ ಆರಾಧನೆಯಲ್ಲೂ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಸಕ್ರಿಯವಾಗಿ ಪಾಲ್ಗೊಂಡರು.
ಶಿಲುಬೆಯ ಹಾದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಗಮನ ಸೆಳೆದ ಮಕ್ಕಳು
ಇಂದು ಬೆಳಿಗ್ಗೆ ಧರ್ಮಪ್ರಾಂತ್ಯದ ಬಹುತೇಕ ಚರ್ಚ್ಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆದ ‘ಶಿಲುಬೆಯ ಹಾದಿ’ಯ ಭಕ್ತಿ ಸೇವೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಮುಂಚೂಣಿಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದರು. ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತರ ಕಷ್ಟಾನುಭವಗಳ ಹದಿನಾಲ್ಕು ಸ್ಥಳಗಳ ಸ್ಮರಣೆಯ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ, ಮಕ್ಕಳೇ ಶಿಲುಬೆಯನ್ನು ಹೊತ್ತು ಸಾಗಿದ್ದು ನೆರೆದಿದ್ದ ಭಕ್ತಾದಿಗಳ ಗಮನ ಸೆಳೆಯಿತು. ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗಾಗಿಯೇ ವಿಶೇಷ ಧ್ಯಾನ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಹಮ್ಮಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲಾಗಿತ್ತು, ಇದು ಅವರಿಗೆ ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತನ ತ್ಯಾಗದ ಸಂದೇಶವನ್ನು ಅರ್ಥಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಸಹಕಾರಿಯಾಯಿತು.
ಹೊರಾಂಗಣ ಶಿಲುಬೆಯ ಹಾದಿ ಮತ್ತು ಜೀವಂತ ಪ್ರದರ್ಶನ
ಅನೇಕ ಧರ್ಮಕೇಂದ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಚರ್ಚ್ನ ಹೊರಾಂಗಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತು ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕ ರಸ್ತೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಶಿಲುಬೆಯ ಹಾದಿಯ ಮೆರವಣಿಗೆ ನಡೆಯಿತು. ಕೆಲವು ಕಡೆ ಯೇಸುವಿನ ಮರಣದಂಡನೆಯ ದೃಶ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ‘ಜೀವಂತ ಪ್ರದರ್ಶನ’ದ (Live Enactment) ಮೂಲಕ ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತಪಡಿಸಲಾಯಿತು. ಧರ್ಮಗುರುಗಳು, ಧರ್ಮಭಗಿನಿಯರು, ವಾರ್ಡ್ ಗುರಿಕಾರರು ಹಾಗೂ ಸಂಘ-ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಗಳ ಪದಾಧಿಕಾರಿಗಳು ಈ ಭಕ್ತಿ ಸೇವೆಯ ನೇತೃತ್ವ ವಹಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಮಧ್ಯಾಹ್ನ 12 ಗಂಟೆಯ ವೇಳೆಗೆ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಚರ್ಚ್ಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನಾ ವಿಧಿಗಳು ಪೂರ್ಣಗೊಂಡವು.
ಪಂಜ ಚರ್ಚ್ನಲ್ಲಿ ಬಿಷಪ್ ಭಾಗಿ; ಅಪರಾಹ್ನ ವಿಶೇಷ ಆರಾಧನೆ
ಬೆಳಿಗ್ಗೆಯಿಂದಲೇ ಉಪವಾಸ ಮತ್ತು ಮೌನ ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ತೊಡಗಿರುವ ಭಕ್ತಾದಿಗಳು ಈಗ ಅಪರಾಹ್ನದ ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ ವಿಧಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಸಜ್ಜಾಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತರು ಪ್ರಾಣ ಬಿಟ್ಟ ಸಮಯವೆಂದು ನಂಬಲಾದ ಮಧ್ಯಾಹ್ನ 3 ಗಂಟೆಯ ನಂತರ ಚರ್ಚ್ಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಶೇಷ ಆರಾಧನೆ ನಡೆಯಲಿದೆ. ಈ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಶಿಲುಬೆಯ ಆರಾಧನೆ, ಪವಿತ್ರ ಪ್ರಸಾದ ಸ್ವೀಕಾರ ಮತ್ತು ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತರ ಕಷ್ಟಾನುಭವದ ವಾಚನ ನಡೆಯಲಿದೆ. ಇಂದು ಯಾವುದೇ ಬಲಿಪೂಜೆ (ಮಾಸ್) ಇರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.
ಮಂಗಳೂರು ಧರ್ಮಪ್ರಾಂತ್ಯದ ಧರ್ಮಾಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾದ ಪರಮ ಪೂಜ್ಯ ಡಾ. ಪೀಟರ್ ಪೌಲ್ ಸಲ್ಡಾನ್ಹಾ ಅವರು ಪುತ್ತೂರು ವಲಯದ ಪಂಜದ ಸಂತ ರೀಟಾ ಚರ್ಚ್ನಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯುವ ಶುಭ ಶುಕ್ರವಾರದ ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ ವಿಧಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾಗವಹಿಸಲಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
ಈ ಶೋಕದ ಆಚರಣೆಯು ನಾಳೆ ರಾತ್ರಿ ನಡೆಯಲಿರುವ ‘ಪಾಸ್ಖಾ ಜಾಗರಣೆ’ಯೊಂದಿಗೆ (ಈಸ್ಟರ್ ವಿಜಿಲ್) ಕೊನೆಗೊಂಡು, ಭಾನುವಾರ ಕ್ರಿಸ್ತರ ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನದ ಹಬ್ಬವಾದ ಈಸ್ಟರ್ ಅನ್ನು ಸಡಗರದಿಂದ ಆಚರಿಸಲಾಗುವುದು.
