The urban Self Help Groups promoted by Canara Organization for Development and Peace ® (CODP) celebrated International Women’s Day on 15th March 2015 in the Conference hall of CODP. The programme was presided over by Mrs. Jacintha Alfred, the Mayor of Mangalore City Corporation
The Director of CODP, Rev.Fr. Oswald Monteiro in his welcome speech, greeted all women on the International Women’s day. Referring tothe banned documentary film by BBC“India’s Daughter”, he said that there can be no empowerment of women unless there is a change in the mindsetof the society towards women. Support from men is equally important for the success of every woman. Then he also explained the work done by CODP forthe empowerment of women by formation of self help groups and capacity building..
He felicitated Mrs. Jacintha Alfred on her election as the new mayor of Mangalore City Corporation and gave full credit to her husband Mr. Vijay for supporting herin her social work for the society.
Mayor Mrs. Jacintha Alfred in her presidential speech, wished all women a Happy International Women’s day, and thanked CODP for working towards the empowerment of women.Sharing the experience of own upbringing by her mother, she advised all women to educate their children without gender discrimination.
On this occasion, four self-employed personsvizSelvy, Chiranjivi, Lathika and Natarajwere honored. They shared their experience of self-reliance through self- employment.
The Project coordinator Mrs. Shanthi D Souza, Animators Mrs. Hemalatha and Mrs. Chandra Kala successfully organized the programme.
Mrs.Shewethacompered the programme, and Mrs.Mahalakshmi welcomed the gathering. The function ended with a vote of thanks from Mrs.Rekha.
