Mangaluru, July 26, 2025 – The World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly was celebrated in a deeply spiritual and joy-filled manner at St Anthony’s Charity Institutes, Jeppu, Mangalore. This year’s event held a special dual significance, as it also marked the 10th death anniversary of Late Rev. Fr Walter Albuquerque, a pioneering figure in the charitable and pastoral mission of the Institute.

The day commenced with a solemn High Mass at St Anthony’s Chapel, presided over by Rev. Fr Praveen Martis, Administrator of the Institutes. The homily was delivered by Rev. Fr J.B. Simultaneously, Holy Masses were celebrated across the various residential homes by priests including Rev. Fr Vivian Rodrigues (Assistant Director), Rev. Fr Gilbert D’Souza (Chaplain), and Rev. Fr Nelson Olivera (Resident Priest). Each celebrant shared powerful reflections on the value, contribution, and spiritual strength of the elderly, enriching the faith of all present. A thoughtfully curated special liturgy enhanced the solemnity of the occasion.

The afternoon saw a lively and heartfelt gathering at Sambhram Hall, bringing together residents, clergy, staff, and guests. A cultural programme was led by the Late Fr Walter Albuquerque Memorial Choir, under the leadership of Mr Simon Pais. The performance featured songs, skits, games, and moments of shared laughter, rekindling the spirit of community and celebration among the elderly residents.

A moment of appreciation was extended during the function to Mr Simon Pais and Mr Cyprian Vas, in recognition of their longstanding cultural and musical contributions. Fr J.B. Crasta felicitated both for their dedication in keeping the musical spirit of the community vibrant.

The celebration was enriched by the presence of Rev. Fr Andrew D’Souza (Parish Priest and Spiritual Director of the Choir), along with Fr Praveen Martis, Fr Vivian Rodrigues, and Fr Nelson Olivera.
