Mangaluru, Feb 12 : Commemorating the Twenty-First Anniversary of laying the foundation stone of St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), the college hosted its annual Foundation Day Lecture on 11 February 2022 at 3:00 PM in Kalam Auditorium of the college. Most Rev. Dr Peter Paul Saldanha, Bishop of Mangalore and the President of SJEC, delivered the Foundation Day Lecture on the topic “Accompanying the Students”.
In his lecture, Dr Peter Paul Saldanha remembered all those who have worked for SJEC to make it a premier institution. He congratulated the management and the staff of the college for getting accredited by NAAC and NBA to go with institutional autonomy. He urged all stakeholders to strive for a greater level of excellence.
His Lordship stressed the importance of listening with eyes while saying that listening is one form of communication that requires great concentration. He went on to say that a teacher can bring out the best in the students by listening to them. He called upon the teachers to be a friend, a philosopher and a guide. The Bishop opined that teachers should not only provide ideas and skills but also make the students experience spiritual dignity. He stressed the fact that education with a value system is the need of the hour. He also read out the 11 point oath given by Abdul Kalam for teachers which speak about well being and development of students.
Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, Director of SJEC, Rev. Fr Alwyn Richard D’Souza, Assistant Director, Dr Rio D’Souza, Principal, Mr Rakesh Lobo, HR Manager, were present during the occasion. Dr Vincent Crasta, Dean of Academics moderated the lecture. Ms Chaithra Shetty, Assistant Professor in the Department of EEE, was the Convener of the event. Ms Ramya M, Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering compeered the programme.
To mark the institution’s 21st Foundation Day, the Bishop planted a sapling on campus in the presence of other dignitaries.
As the college is entering into a new decade of its existence, the institution announced the construction of a new infrastructural complex in the form of SJEC Innovation Center. This centre will drive the development of new technologies, community engagement, incubation and startups, and entrepreneurial activities of the institution. As a first step towards setting up this wonderful facility, the Bishop blessed the Foundation Stone of the building on this occasion.
