HISTORY :

Being nearly six km away from Bela, the people of Kollangana found it hard to  frequent the church for their regular religious duties. At their urging the parish priest of Bela Fr Pascal Lobo bought three acres of land at Aranthodu. This was in 1974. However, with his transfer in the following year he could not execute the plan of starting a chapel in the place. His successors were less keen on pursuing the plan. Finally in 1984 at the pastoral visit by the Bishop the people brought up the matter again and realizing the reasonableness of the plea the Bishop decided that the parish priest should take up the matter. The Bishop himself laid the foundation stone on September 15, 1984. Fr C.M.A. Lasrado was the parish priest then. However there was no progress in the work with both the parish priest and the parishioners showing little interest in the realization of the plan. Fr Valerian Rodrigues who succeeded Fr Lasrado on May 16, 1985 realized how urgent the need of a chapel at Kollangana was.
Apart from other people he succeeded in convincing even the Bishop of the urgency of building a chapel in the place and ensuring his support. Thanks to his efforts the people were united in pursuit of the goal with their toil and even financial backing, though they themselves were rather poverty stricken. In addition Fr Valerian succeeded in refurbishing an old well as it was badly needed for the work. So too
the place being six km away from Bela, after much pleading and pressurizing the government, he secured a convenient place for cemetery. In the meantime people of various ward involved themselves tirelessly in the work of the church building at Kollangana. So much labour, financially supported by outsiders too, finally saw its fruitfulness in the erection and the blessing of the church in honour of St Thomas
the Apostle. This was followed by another construction–that of a presbytery, begum in 1993. Fr Paul D’Souza, the new parish priest began the work of construction, though, despite the fact that there was no resident parish priest – in fact there was as yet no independent parish still. Various parish activities were going on in the place. The pace of movements, however, was rather slow when compared to th parishes in the north. Thus as late as 1997 the people of Kollangana and around sent a petition to the Bishop to make their substation into a parish with a resident priest of their own. In response the Bishop decided to appoint a commission of priests to study the possibility of the proposal, and after receiving a positive response by the commission
issued the official Decree of Erection of St Thomas the Apostle Parish at Kollangana on May 4, 1998. Accordingly Fr Oswald Monteiro took charge of the parish as the pioneering parish priest on May 14, 1998. The same day evening the Sisters of the Queen of the Apostles, who had been toiling in the place for more than four months, braving all odds, decided to wind up their stay in the place and withdrew for good. Subsequently their place was taken by the Bethany Sisters on May 28, 2003.
The new parish priest, Fr Vincent D’Souza took charge on May 16, 2005, and handed over the charge to Fr Michael D’Silva on June 4, 2012. Each of these priests, through their singleminded dedication, ably supported by the people of God and benefactors from outside, has made his invaluable contribution to the flourishing state of the parish.
