HISTORY :
The Catholics of the place in and around were feeling acutely the need of a house of worship for years now. Fr Louis Furtado, parish priest of Vorkady, and the local Catholics had a meeting in 1955 and discussed seriously the prospects of building a church in the place. It took three to four years for their plans to take some concrete shape. Mr Baptist Monteiro and family, Gurkar of Kolchappa Ward, offered 4.98 acres of land to build the church on. Bishop Raymond D’Mello visited the place and after inspecting the land gave his approval to construct the church. The people, all
enthusiastic, joined together to put up a compound wall and sank a well. In 1959 the V.G., Mgr W.A. Lewis, laid the foundation stone. The work started immediately though it proceeded haltingly, finances being the main hurdle. Everone in the parish – some from outside too, contributed, the Diocese donating Rs 4,000/- the total amount coming to no more than Rs 30,000. Finally on September 5, 1965, Fr Louis Furtado, on his transfer to Manjeshwar from Vorkady, blessed the church and said the first Mass in the place along with some concelebrants. The walls had not been plastered. The building remained in this condition till November 13, 1983 when an independent parish was carved out. However in 1969 Fr P.P. Crasta, parish priest of Vorkady, took the initiative and put up a presbytery, completing the building in 1972.
As in the case of the church, the plastering of the presbytery too had yet to be done.
Then an attempt was made to acquire an acre of government land for a burial ground. However this was objected to by the Hindus. At last only when the church was made independent some 15 cents of the requested land was permitted to be walled and assigned as a burial place. Also, both before the inauguration of the parish and afterwards agriculture was tried in the church compound like the planting of coconut saplings and cashew nut trees. The independent parish was officially established on September 27, 1983. The boundaries of the parish too were demarcated. Bishop Basil himself did the inauguration. Fr Cyril Pinto was the first
parish priest. The Vorkady Church (Mother Parish) gave to the newborn Rs 5,000 as its share to the daughter. The amount wasspent to plaster the presbytery and furnish it. The plastering of the church, its electrification etc. were subse quently seen to thanks mostly to the donation received from the Pontifical Mission Aid Society, Rome. However, the parishioners were more generous than one could expect. In fact they proved themselves consistently generous in substantiating their concern for the needs of the church. In 1989, for instance, they paid familywise almost Rs 18,000 to
provide the church with 46 benches (8’ x 1’, with back rest). Vicars came to Miyapadavu rather in quick succession for various reasons. Fr Frederick F. Pinto replaced Fr Cyril Pinto in 1990, but had to move out within two years for reasons of health. During his brief tenure he had a well sunk costing Rs 7,500. Fr Liguory
Menezes who replaced him started building the church portico estimated to cost Rs 4,50,000. But all of a sudden death overtook him on May 28, 1995. His mortal remains were interred in the portico he had half completed. Fr F. Lobo who replaced him was transferred all of a sudden just when he had finished the roofing the
portico. Fr Sylvester D’Costa, however, who came to take his place, was happily destined to stay longer. His dedication could be seen in the achievements in the parish. Despite its enormously expensive nature the protico was completed along with the side verandahs and an electric motor for drip irrigation was acquired; so
too a tank was built. A youth sammelan was organized in which nearly 150 youth of the parish participated. Basic Christian Communities were established in
each ward, with Fr Sylvester himself being there in person all along. After the tentative experiences of the past a new youth group for both boys and girls was started officially, christened now Fatima Youth Group, to be affiliated to the Mangalore Diocesan Youth Movement. Likewise there was the official inauguration of the Catholic Sabha as part of a joint venture in the Kasargod Varado. Thus the parish showed itself pulsating with activities. To facilitate better working between the families all over the parish the wards were further divided, resulting finally into nine wards. A training programme was organized for the gurkars and for the leaders of
SCC’s. Thus the continuation of the good work has been ensured.
