HISTORY :

Also known as Arkul and Mermajal, Holy Family Church, Omzoor, is one of the three ancient parishes of the Diocese of Mangalore. A church was first built at Arkula by a Franciscan priest in 1568. Re-established between 1601 and 1625, it was dedicated to the Holy Family. The Bangera kings of Nandavar donated the land for the present church.

Following the return of Christians from captivity at Srirangapattana in 1799, the church was rededicated, with Fr Joachim Manuel Mendis becoming its first parish priest after rededication.

Omzoor is the mother church of Belloor (1920), Kelarai (1935) and Neermarga (1968). The church underwent several renovations, notably under Fr Aloysius Rodrigues, whose remodelling was blessed on 27 November 1959. Fr Andrew D’Souza later renovated the façade, improved the presbytery and contributed to the establishment of the Fermai sub-station, officially erected in 1999.
