HISTORY :
Earlier known as Biddel and Nallyapadav, these areas came to be known as Shaktinagar with the establishment of the Ramashakti Mission at Kaligudda. With the increase of Catholic population in the A and B wards of Cordel parish the need was felt for a chapel here leading gradually towards the establishment of a new parish.
Catholic Welfare Association was established in 1981 to organize the Catholics in and around Shaktinagar and open-air mass was celebrated once a month. In 1986 Fr Elias D’Souza, who became the Vicar Vara of the new City Deanery, took charge of the Cordel parish. 50 cents of land donated to the diocese by the late Fr C.T. Sequeira was earmarked for the new chapel and the foundation stone was laid on June 19, 1988. The new chapel was blessed by Bishop Basil Salvadore D’Souza and inaugurated by the Mayor of the M.C.C. and parishoner, P.M. Castelino on October 20, 1988.
The Redemptorist Fathers took an interest in developing Shaktinagar into a parish. Frs Eugene D’Silva and Lester D’Silva started their ministry on January 17, 1999. They were able to get the land for the new church and it was transferred to the diocese. Since the land could not be transferred to the Redemptorists, they bid farewell to Shaktinagar and Fr Harold Pereira was appointed as the administrator for Shaktinagar on June 10, 2001.
In 2002 about 2 ½ acres of land was acquired for the church and then gave fillip to the formation of the Shaktinagar parish. On May 25, 2002, Fr G.W. Vaz of Cordel laid the foundation stone for the presbytery. It was decided to name the parish to be Mary, the Mother of God parish. The chapel was extended into a church. The site of the new church is named Mariagiri, the Hillock of Our Lady. On January 1, 2003 the new church and the presbytery were blessed by Bishop Aloysius P. D’Souza. Four wards of Cordel parish and one ward from Bondel parish with nearly 200 Catholic families form the new parish of Shaktinagar, which will be established soon.
