HISTORY :
Fr Alexander P. D’Souza and his sister Ms Celestine D’Souza bought some 27 acres of land (of Mulgeni) and named it Mariashram Estate in 1941. In 1962, however, both of made the estate over to the Bishop of Mangalore. The place was within the parish limits of Manjeshwar and the vicar of Manjeshwar Parish was attending to the needs of the Catholics of the place. In the meantime Fr Alexander had built a chapel in the place which he used to celebrate the Sunday Mass in and help the people. His sister had built a sort of primary school to educate the unlettered children. When the number of students increased the school was expanded till Std V. Several priests took up in turn the responsibility of the ashram after the death of Fr Alexendar – each making his contribution to the improvement of the place and of the people, both spiritually and a materially. Best known of them was Fr Arthur Pereira, who while
being chaplain of the place was in charge of C.O.D.P. too (30-5- 1982-30-5-1991) that helped. During his tenure Mariashram was cut off from Manjeshwar Parish, and made an independent chaplaincy. The Catholic families of the place had gone up to 30 by now. Fr Arthur attended to their spiritual welfare through liturgy and catechism, introducing a second Mass on Sundays and urging the people to be earnest about their Sunday obligations. Since the existing chapel could not accommodate all he went in to construct a larger building as well as a presbytery, which were completed and inaugurated on December 24, 1986. This was a symbol of spiritual regeneration as well as the economic, educational and social uplift of the people. Incidentally at the suggestion of the Bishop the former presbytery was remodelled and made Friendship House to accommodate priests who were to undergo de-addiction. Fr Arthur’s successor, Fr Valerian Rodrigues (1991-1998) carried forward the good work already going on, and added others too.
The parish hall was completed. The balwadi was started, various camps meant to attend to the needs of the people were conducted. And then on August 15, 1994 Mariashram was raised to the status of an independent parish with Our Lady Assumed into Heaven for its patroness. Fr Joe Mary Shenoy succeeded Fr Valerian on May 19, 1998, bringing in fresh life of the Spirit into the parish. He would have his
achievements to count: the starting of the St Vincent de Paul Society, St Anthony’s grotto with its novena, an imposing belfry, retreats and above all the starting of the Small Christian Communities. These good works were to be followed by his worthy successors like Fr Rosario Fernandes (2001-2007), Fr Norbert Lobo (2008-2009)
and Fr Nelson Olivera (2009-). Meanwhile the Ursuline Sisters came in to take up the parish school and share in the other parochial activities. In 2009 they had the happiness of having their own convent building, christened now Jyoti Nilaya.
In 2011 the parish completed 25 years. As part of the celebration Fr Nelson succeeded in enlarging the hall and ensuring that it brings in much needed returns.
