HISTORY :

There is a powerful circular eddy of water (Suli in Kannada) at the meeting of the Paryaswini river and the Kandadka rivulet. So the place is known as Sullia. This is a mission parish. Originally this was a part of Puttur. Msgr R.D. Sequeira of Puttur built the church and the presbytery building in 1932 and handed it over to the Jesuits. In 1936 it was separated from Puttur and made independent with Sampaje mission attached to it.

Fr A. M. Camisa, sj of St Joseph’s Seminary, Mangalore, who settled in Sullia to work with the Koragas was the first parish priest. The Koraga converts from Pavur in Kasaragod District settled in Sullia during his time. Three Olivet Brothers came to Sullia to look after the Koragas when Fr Camisa was under house arrest in the seminary during the World War II. Then Sullia was served from Puttur.

Fr Elias P. Dias was appointed as the parish priest in 1944. The brother of Fr Camisa brought a bell from Italy and the belfry was built. Fr Arthur D’Souza (1956-1966) repaired the church and the presbytery. Fr Victor Castelino (1978-1980) wanted to build a new church but could not get the necessary funds. Fr Mark D’Sa started the construction of the new church which was blessed on December 1, 1983. The bell was broken in 1979 and a new belfry has been built by Fr Maurice Paula completely with the German help.

When Fr Arthur C.A. D’Souza was the Vicar houses were built and rented out. During Fr Abel Coelho’s time electrification of church was done. The new church were inaugurated during Fr Mark D’Sa’s time.

Fr Elias P. Dias began the St Brigid Lower Elementary School in 1951. This school was upgraded to Higher Elementary in 1962 during Fr Arthur C.A. D’Souza’s time. On December 1, 1983, Anganvady and Fr Elias D’Souza began St Joseph’s Higher Primary School (English Medium) and the work of building a hall is under process.
Fr Elias D’Souza is the 9th parish priest of Sullia.
