HISTORY :

Moodbidri was once the seat of the Chowta Rajas.  It is famous for its Bastis (Jain temples).  Fr  Faustine Corti sj,  the pioneer missionary of Narol, founded a mission station here and built a small chapel for the new Catholics in 1920 which was blessed in 1923 by Bishop Perini and it was served by Narol missionaries.  The people from the villages neighbouring the station used to come here for their spiritual needs.  They requested for a resident priest.  Bishop Valerian J. D’Souza raised the status of Alangar station to that of an independent missionary parish on December 8, 1928.  Fr Francis Elias D’Souza took charge on January 19, 1929 as the parish priest.  He built the presbytery and the church in 1930.  He invited the Sisters of Charity and built a convent for them.  The construction of the T.B. Sanatorium was undertaken and it was inaugurated on September 3, 1958 and handed over to the Diocese for administrative purposes.

Fr Francis Xavier D’Souza (1958-1971) established two churches, one at  Moodbidri Town,  the Corpus Christi Church, and the other at Belvai, the St Martin De Porres Church.  Fr J.S.T. Rodrigues (1971-1978) improved the compound and planted nearly 200 coconut palms and carried out a lot of agricultural activities.
Fr Denis Castelino who took charge in 1994 renovated the church and the presbytery.  He started a new English Medium Primary School, and built a hall, started an English Medium High School in 2001 and began the construction of the school buildings.

Fr Vincent D’Souza is the 10th parish priest of Moodbidri-Alangar, wellknown in Lions Clubs International.
