HISTORY :
Catholics call this place Mogarnad and locally it is known as Karingana. Originally Mogarnad was a part of Bantwal parish. Due to the devastation caused by Tipu Sultan, no record exists as to the origin and early history of the church which was established around 1775. The reigning petty Raja of Nandavar donated the adjacent land to the church and a Hindu donated the place where the old church stands today. It was under the jurisdiction of Goa until 1886 when it was ceded to Mangalore. The name of the priest who built the old church, which is now used as a hall, cannot be established with certainty.
Not much is known about the priests who lived here before 1800. One of them was known as Dodda Guru. The only Jesuit priest who acted as parish priest for some months was Fr P.S. Chiarello sj. Fr Cajetan Pereira, the first Manglorean priest ordained at St Joseph’s Seminary was here for 4 years and built the old presbytery and the sanctuary of the church between 1896 to 1904. Fr L.S. D’Souza built the altar of the old church.
The new church, belfry and presbytery were built by Fr Cyril D’Souza, the 26th parish priest since 1800. It was inaugurated on January 21, 1988 by Bishop Basil D’Souza. Gradually, this parish was dismembered into Puttur, Borimar, Vittal, Karady and Ammembal parishes. Fr Harrold Menezes (1974-1983) had built a small chapel at Salethur 31 kms from Mangalore dedicated to Our Lay of Perpetual Succour. It was inaugurated on February 9, 1977. It became an independent parish in 2000.
Fr Cajetan Pereira (1896-1904) might have built St Anthony’s Higher Primary School. However, no records are available in this regard. Fr J.M. D’Souza (1917-1930) acquired 2½ acres of land from government to build a school. Fr L.S. D’Souza (1930-1939) extended the school building.
Location:
This church is situated at a distance of 30 kms east of Mangalore and 7 kms from B.C. Road and is surrounded by Shambur, Boriomar, Agrar, Ammembal, Vittal, Modankap and Farangipet parishes.
