HISTORY :

Earlier Panir was known as Ullal parish.  The first church is believed to have been built in 1526.  When the Blessed Joseph Vaz worked here for some time in between 1681 and 1685, some land was gifted to him.  The church was demolished by Tipu Sultan.  After the return of the Christians from the captivity the church was rebuilt in 1873 on the gifted land by Fr John Baptist Rebello.  In 1912 the sanctuary was renewed.   Fr J. A. Rodrigues built the altar and the sacristy.  The church was renovated by Fr Frank I. Peris.

Fr Maurice D’Souza erected the present church building in 1987 and Fr Charles Saldanha constructed the presbytery, hall and the belfry.

Panir School was begun in 1940 and Ursuline Sisters took charge of the school in 1943.  Fr G.S. Lewis built the orphanage in 1944 and it was run by the Ursulines.   In 1975, during the time of Fr Charles John Aranha a new school building was constructed.
