HISTORY :

Originally part of Kayyar’s Christ the King parish, the distant Catholic community of Lawrence Nagar, Permude, faced significant travel challenges for worship. In 1972, under Fr. Alexander Aranha, a small school building on 4.8 acres was repurposed as a chapel for Sunday Mass and catechism.

Spiritual and structural growth gained steady momentum over the decades. A parish cemetery was blessed in 2012, followed by the laying of the foundation stone for a new church in 2016 by Fr. Denis Moras Prabhu. On July 1, 2017, the chapel became independent and was entrusted to the Order of Preachers (Dominican Priests).

Acceding to persistent requests from the faithful, Bishop Aloysius Paul D’Souza officially elevated the chapel to an independent parish dedicated to St. Lawrence the Martyr on March 15, 2018, installing Fr. Melwyn Fernandes, OP, as its first parish priest. Comprising 61 families across four wards, the young parish celebrated major milestones soon after—blessing a priests’ residence in 2018 and inaugurating its new church structure and belfry on May 14, 2019, under Bishop Peter Paul Saldanha.

Location:
The Church is situated about 34 km south of Mangalore. It is surrounded immediately by Kayyar, Bela, and Kumbla Parishes.
