HISTORY :

Originally part of Ullal (Panir), Vorkady’s spiritual journey began in 1898 when Fr. Cyprian Coelho built a thatched shed for Mass and basic education. Recognizing its growth, Bishop Cavadini established Vorkady as an independent parish on August 26, 1910. The imposing church structure—built by Fr. V.R. Fernandes (1912–1923), known as the parish founder—still stands today.

Over the decades, dedicated pastors nurtured the community’s spiritual and socio-economic life. Fr. D.L. Mathias invited the Ursuline Sisters in 1923, while Fr. T.A. Lobo and Fr. A.P. D’Souza won hearts through charitable care and compassionate leadership.

Under Fr. L. Furtado and later Fr. Peter Serrao, Vorkady acted as a mother parish, sowing seeds for new communities by establishing chapels at Miyapadavu and Kommangala. Subsequent pastors expanded educational facilities, introduced the St. Vincent de Paul Society and Catholic Sabha, and established Small Christian Communities.

Today, enriched by over a century of pastoral devotion, religious sisters, and lay leadership, Sacred Heart Church stands as a vibrant mother church and enduring center of faith in the region.
