HISTORY :
From the beginning till 1882 the place was served from Ullal. The foundation stone for the chapel was laid in September 1879, and through the enterprise and liberality of Messrs I.P. Fernandes, J.C. Saldanha and other Catholic officers the church building was completed and the first Mass was celebrated in it in 1880. Later on the chapel was served from Kudrepady church in Madur village. When the Kundrepady church was demolished and a church was built at Bela, Kasargod began to be served from Bela. In 1933 Kasargod parish was established as an independent entity
with Fr F.X. Nazareth as its first resident parish priest. Fr Gratian D’Souza built the belfry in 1939. Fr A.F. Pinto effected several improvements in the church as well as in the presbytery during his tenure lasting from 1945 till 1961. He added a portico to the church, built the sacristy, painted the church and put electric installations in the church and the presbytery. While the number of parish priests who served the parish can each point to the various and valuable contributions they have made to the upkeep and growth of the parish, Fr Hilary Lobo (1995-2002)may be described as outshining them all. “During his time the parish saw all round pastoral development. Though a person of short stature he was a man of God, with simplicity and humility. He had a definite pastoral plan, which paid attention to multi-dimensional formation of the parishioners. Initially he paid attention to the liturgy. The education and faith formation of children was given due attention. Separate children’s Mass was introduced on Sunday, followed by compulsory catechism. He revived the altar boys sodality, girls’ Marian sodality and St Vincent de Paul’s sodality (sic). In 1996 the Legion of Mary was formed, and in 1997 the Catholic Sabha was started to promote lay leadership. Regular training programmes, camps and seminars were held for youth, children, married couples, women and Parish Council members. The church of the new millennium was envisaged by him by introducing the Small Christian Communities in each ward. As a result the spiritual life of the faithful was revivedand many lay leaders emerged. His interest in ecumenical movement made him associate with KCA and YMCA. Every year common Christmas celebrations and way of the cross were held in Kasargod Town. A massive rally of all Christians was held to
conclude the great Jubilee year 2000”. Fr Hilary Lobo ventured into the mega project of constructing the new church and presbytery in 1998. The foundation stone of the
church was laid on April 25, 1999 by Most Rev. Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza and the foundation stone of the presbytery was laid by Most Rev. Gerald Isaac Lobo (then Episcopal Vicar) on February 22, 2000. The parishioners, the Parish Council and the youth worked had in hard with their pastor to complete these projects.
They were completed and the inauguration and blessing of the new church and the presbytery were held on April 9, 2002. Undoubtedly Fr Hilary is the modern architect of the Kasargod parish. However one should not lose sight of the other dedicated priests who have served the people: The less written history about
them does not allow us to speak about them at length. The parishioners of Kasargod gratefully cherish their memory. The then Episcopal Vicar of Southern Deanery, presently the Bishop of Udupi Diocese, Most Rev. Gerald Lobo was also instrumental in giving positive developmental approach to the parishes of the deanery.
